City Honors Another Olympian
The Choice of Champions® recently honored another incredible champion.
The Clermont City Council continued its tradition of honoring Olympians with a gold key to the city on Oct. 9 with a special presentation to Churandy Martina, who trained in the city prior to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Mayor Gail Ash read a proclamation naming Oct. 9 Churandy Martina Day.
Martina, a four-time Olympian, has been competing abroad since the 2016 Olympics and arranged to come to Clermont to accept the key from the mayor at the beginning of the regularly scheduled council meeting at City Hall.
A native of Curacao, a Dutch Caribbean island, Martina represents the Netherlands in international track-and-field competitions. He was accompanied by a Curacao National TV Channel crew who flew to Clermont to capture the presentation.
Martina holds the Dutch National records for the 100-meter with a time of 9.91 seconds and the 200-meter with a time of 19.81. He is part of the men’s 4-x-100 meter relay that set a Dutch national record of 38.29. Martina is a popular figure in Curacao, as well as in the Netherlands, where he was named the 2016 Most Positive Person.
Martina and Usain Bolt are the only athletes who reached the final of the 200-meter at the Olympics three consecutive times.
